The Final Defeat.
They went inside again, holding each other's hands tightly. The reddish light of the descending sun was coming in through the kitchen window, gently caressing Daisy's face as she sat down at the table.
She could still feel the scent of them as she looked into her husband's face and she tried so hard not to start sobbing again. Persistent tears tickled in the corners of her eyes but she paid them no attention at all, since she was busy breathing in the aroma of unconditional love while it was still within reach.
It was funny how days like these could add years to your face. But then time had always been relative to her, as hours stretched over birthdays and Christmas dinners, and years shrank into a quick, breathless kiss on her cheek while the mates shouted impatiently outside, eager for their first pint.
She was aware of the days creeping by, but the ones in between that day long ago when they took their vows, and this dreadful afternoon had all turned into a blur she honestly couldn't account for. All the same, she now realised that their life together had just been a road laid down to lead them up to This Day. This glorious Day of Loss and Desillusion.
